Met je ass op een #bangalijst voor journalisten…

Op 29 maart 2012 was Arie Boomsma te gast als tafelheer bij DWDD. Hij begon de uitzending samen met Matthijs van Nieuwkerk over het nieuws van de dag. Dat waren de ‘bangalijsten‘, die door het trieste voorval van de zelfmoord van een 13 jarig meisje extra in de aandacht waren gekomen. Nu had de redactie van DWDD geen meisje kunnen vinden die op zo’n lijst stond en naar het programma wou komen, dus WhatsAppte Arie mij of ik misschien een meisje kende. Het zou gaan om een degelijk item waarbij de beleving en gevolgen van het meisje centraal zouden staan, bovendien kan ik ook op Arie rekenen als ik jongeren help. Daarom heb ik via mijn contacten een meisje bereid gevonden enkele uren later in de studio van DWDD te verschijnen.

Tijdens de uitzending noemde Arie mijn naam, uit respect en dat waardeer ik. Maar de ‘hype van de bangalijsten’ was en is nog steeds niet over. Dus sindsdien word ik geregeld gebeld door met name journalisten en onderzoekers. Dan luidt de vraag of ik ze met “zo’n meisje” in contact kan brengen. Lees verder →

Host @ Special Event ‘Joseph Oubelkas: 400 brieven van mijn moeder’

Op 26 januari 2012 vond in Hotel V in Amsterdam een bijzondere bijeenkomst plaats. Een ‘special event’ van Joseph Oubelkas (mede georganiseerd door Omar Kbiri) in het teken van zijn boek ‘400 brieven van mijn moeder‘. Joseph vertelde aan zo’n 200 familieleden, vrienden, bekenden en kennissen zijn verhaal over 4,5 jaar onschuldig vast zitten in Marokko EN zijn ervaringen van de laatste 2 jaar van vrijheid en steeds meer ‘bekendheid’.

Ik deed na afloop van het verhaal van Joseph een Q&A sessie met het publiek. Dit vond ik bijzonder om te doen, ook omdat er oud celgenoten van Joseph aanwezig waren, en mensen zoals Arjan Erkel (die zelf jarenlang gegijzeld werd). Gelukkig kon er – mede dankzij goede grappen van Mimoun Ouled Radi – tijdens dit emotionele verhaal ook goed gelachen worden!! :)

DE nieuwe leven (#wvdi)

Vandaag, 29 september 2011, spreek ik bij de ‘Week van de Inspiratie‘ (#wvdi) over ‘DE nieuwe leven‘. Is de Belastingdienst wel ‘toekomstproof‘? Reken niet op ‘death by powerpoint’! Dit verhaal is sowieso bedoeld voor diegene die vinden dat de titel (DE nieuwe leven) fout is! ;)  Update: je vind mijn Prezi HIER!

WvdI is een week lang en geeft aan hoe zeer het van belang is voor de Belastingdienst om te innoveren. Ik claim in mijn verhaal dat je innovatie leuk moet maken en de meetbaarheid van een spel mee moet geven. Daarmee creer je niet 1 oplossing, maar een ‘oplossende bedrijfscultuur’. Uiteraard koppel ik dat aan ‘DE nieuwe werknemer’. De vraag die ik stel is: willen jullie leiden of volgen? Met de mogelijkheden van vandaag is de keuze aan jou!

How to trigger with leadership?? Best practice by an 11 year old ‘trigger girl’!

About 2,5 years ago 2 friends (Thomas van Gaal en Bijan Lotfi) and me started Trigger Boys. Before that, for more than 5 years I had worked on a lot of youth projects and focussed more or less on activating and communicating with ‘hard-to-reach’ youth groups… like I (once) was myself as well.  Voluntarily, e.g. with founding Young Vision, as well as professionally later on. My personal field of interest became: youth, diversity and social media.

Steve Jobs tells his great story about ‘connecting the dots’ and how you can only do that while backtracking. Well, when I do that I can see that whole my life I’ve been kind of an outsider who likes to trigger.

The last 2 years or so I’ve been involved with The Future Firm. I’ve worked with facilitating teams on at least 15 leadership journeys on the highest level, sometimes with partners like the Oxford Leadership Academy. Which was amazing and I’ve learned a lot. Gijs Pothof has been an awesome mentor (and friend)!

Consciously working on leadership skills in combination with triggering has been a trip! Being aware of yourself as being the first step towards improvement, doesn’t always make it easy. Asking the difficult questions in brainstorms while not relying on hierarchy, sharing an opinion based upon action instead of reaction, creating the win-win story: it is difficult.

I’m taking some risks here and there with working on my skills. I’m loving the challenge of trying to grow, although the bumps in the road can be painful. I’m trying to commit to following my heart, and sometimes that’s tough. I’m pretty sure that DIY’ing and staying foolish & hungry will get me through.

Kids usually got all the inspiration you need. Today I did a trigger session with the innovators of the Dutch Tax Agency. At the end, Juno – the 11 year old daughter of Sandra – joined us. She was listening in and almost naturally put in some real ‘trigger girl’ stuff. Funny, sharp and I loved it. She inspired me, because her ‘interventions’ were pure and honest; true leadership actually. And when we asked, she told us she can be hired as ‘trigger girl’: €100,- an hour. Wow!! :)

Make UR personal ‘drugs&alcohol ‘ plan…

On the 4th of Juli I wasn’t celebrating Independence Day, but I was chilling with the senior kids of the British School in the Netherlands, in Voorschoten. Just like last year, I spoke with them about drugs & alcohol. I made some small adjustments to the materials and set-up, but the general idea is still the same. Keeping it real! Below you will find some context with THIS PREZI that I used.

Youth is constantly being marketed by twisted and contra-dictionary signs and stories about (mis)use of alcohol & drugs. How do you weapon yourself as a youngster against the ‘spam’ of marketeers and society in general? How do you walk your path (including wanting to try and discover new things) as healthy as possible?  How not to get played…!

During this day we talk about what use of substance of any form might do to you: the bad thing AND the fun things. The kids get challenged to walk the shoes of the marketeers of the lobby pro and against alcohol. They judge and create ideas for campaigns. They look at the impact of marketing, as well as alcohol and drugs on their developing brain. In order to guard them, we end the day with making personal plans about how they are going to address the ‘treats & threats’ of life with an healthy mind & body.

I’ve really enjoyed working with this group. I wish them all the luck in college! And I hope to see you next year again, British School. :)

Leadership Journey @ Bergen aan Zee (The Future Firm)

On May 10th and 11th I was in the forest, between the dunes and on the beach of Bergen aan Zee, The Netherlands. Here we (The Future Firm) organized a new leadership journey; although this time we facilitated a 2-day process, instead of 3,4 or 5. Luckely the weather was beautiful, so that we were able to do all of our working sessions outside. The participants had a full program, but they managed to get a lot of work done. My team did great, thanks guys!!

Interview over Leiderschap voor ‘Boven Het Maaiveld’ (Glenn van der Burg)

Glenn van der Burg interviewde mij voor ‘Boven Het Maaiveld‘: zijn blog (en toekomstige boek) over leiderschap. Shit, wat kan ik er over zeggen… behalve dat ik trots ben dat hij mij hiervoor heeft gevraagd! (@Glenn: You inspire me, mattie!) 45 old-timer Volkswagen Beatles & leadership?!


After the desert of India, this journey of The Future Firm was a completely different one: with about 160 people moving through Holland in 16 separate groups. All working, eating and sleeping at different locations and traveling by foot, bike, boat, bus and/or train AND 45 (!!) old-timer Volkswagen Beatles… The journey was ‘just’ 2 days, in which we went through a process of revealing shared common factors of success. Although there were some logistical issues – for example, some delayed and cancelled trains because of an accident – but overall, I think my team can be satisfied with the result for the participants. I’ve seen a lot of hard work, meaningful reflection & sharing, and a lot of fun! :)

#mijnwortel = Landelijke Dag van de Jongerenparticipatie

Vandaag sprak ik op de Landelijke Dag van de Jongerenparticipatie in Utrecht. Ik mocht een energizer/trigger-sessie doen van 20 minuten met het publiek, ruim 200 man en vrouw. En ik had besloten er een persoonlijk verhaal van te maken, dus had ik meer dan 200 wortels bij me. Wat zegt u? Yepperderpep! Meer dan 200 wortels voor iedereen, including myself, terwijl ik wortels helemaal niet lekker vind. De wortel staat in mijn verhaal symbool voor echt iets willen doen – iets extra doen – om de verandering te bewerkstelligen die je graag wil zien.

Ik vond het een mooie dag! Youth and the City had keihard gewerkt om een geweldig event neer te zetten in de Pastoe fabriek te Utrecht. Toffe locatie! Er waren workshops, entertainment, goed eten en drinken en vooral leuke, goede mensen! Micha de Winter (hoogleraar Sociale Wetenschappen Hogeschool Utrecht) sprak wijze woorden! Help jij de International Award for Young People (Nederland) ook??

De International Award for Young People is een wereldwijde organisatie die zich inzet voor het ontwikkelen van leiderschap en stimuleren van participatie voor jongeren. Meer dan 50 jaar geleden opgezet door HRH The Duke of Edinburgh, inmiddels hebben meer dan 7 miljoen jongeren (!!) een bronzen, zilveren en/of gouden medaille gehaald. De resultaten mbt het leven van de jongeren en de maatschappij zijn erg succesvol, zeggen ook de onderzoeksresultaten die sinds dit jaar beschikbaar zijn. Vrijwillige mensen laten de organisatie draaien. Ik vind dat zij supergoed werk doen en ik vind het een te gekke mogelijkheid voor jongeren (en volwassenen) om iets te betekenen voor elkaar, dus… In Nederland ga ik vanaf heden mijn stokje bijdragen op het gebied van externe communicatie en partnerships! Ik zal op mijn blog de ontwikkelingen beschrijven. Ik daag mijn lezers nu alvast uit om de website van de Award Nederland eens te bekijken (plus het onderstaande filmpje) en na te denken of zij een bijdrage kunnen en willen leveren… Ik hoor jullie reacties graag!!

The Future Firm: India

As I blogged about earlier, I was recently in India for a new project for The Future Firm. Brian Bacon (Oxford Leadership Academy) co-facilitated the process. I was there for about 1,5 months in order to set-up and create a complete leadership journey for a new client. I’ve worked very hard to make it a journey which was as sustainable as possible. India wasn’t chosen for no reason, the company’s global management team had a meeting there and we used that opportunity to make this happen. Also, I tried to help out the people in Rajasthan as much as possible with the participation in several parts of the program. It was a big challenge, but the result was (is) great and I enjoyed it very much! It was a beautiful experience, for me as well as for the participants (as they told me). Just 4 fun: The Future Firm in the snow

As you might know, I work with The Future Firm on leadership journeys, which I blogged about on other occasions. Soon I’ll be leaving to India to prepare and facilitate a journey there! The first week of December I worked on a journey in the South of Holland. As always, my Flip cam was in my bag and during the journey I gave it to my collegue Gijs. Presentatie van slotevent Pimp my Block

De NJR is al enkele jaren succesvol actief met het project ‘Pimp my Block‘, waarmee jongeren tussen de 14 en 23 jaar uitgedaagd worden om ideeën in te leveren om iets in hun wijk te veranderen of te organiseren. Het beste idee wint 5000 euro om dat idee ook echt uit te voeren. Pimp My Block zorgt er daarmee voor dat de buurtbewoners elkaar beter leren kennen en er meer mooie dingen in de wijk gebeuren.

Op dit moment zijn in 14 wijken 14 jongeren bezig om hun eigen idee uit te voeren. Zij organiseren een evenement of regelen een bijeenkomst waarvan de wijk beter wordt. Op 20 november vind het slotevent plaats, en ik vind het het cool dat ik dat mag presenteren!

Introduction conference for all Award Project Leaders, NL.

I’m happy to be asked by Wim van der Laan – director of the International Award for Young People, The Netherlands – to speak again at the yearly study conference for all Award Project Leaders, organized by the board of the International Award / The Netherlands. It will be on the 13th of October 2010 in the Strandpaviljoen in Vught (NB). I will give an inspirational introduction on the theme “How can I create a solid base for the Award in my community?’.

Programmacommissie YLS 2010 – verslag & foto’s

Op 29 augustus 2010 bezocht ik kasteel De Berckt in Baarlo weer eens een keer, om de YLS 2010 te checken! Ik heb hier al eerder over gepost. Inmiddels heb ik mijn programmacommissie verslag ingediend en vind ik het tijd om te delen dat ik een schitterende trainingsweek voor jongeren op het gebied van talentontwikkeling, leiderschap en communicatie heb gezien. De begeleiding vanuit NJR was jong, maar heeft een voortreffelijke prestatie neergezet. Het UWC kan samen met het NJR terugkijken op een succesvolle week die 39 jongeren een onvergetelijke tijd heeft gegeven!

In 2008 I organized a project called ‘The Framework Project‘, an international project for Dutch and Ethiopian youth (supported by Xplore). With Van Brandwijk TV, we made a Dutch documentary about the journey which was aired multiple times on for example GoedTV. Now you will find the documentary on Youtube as well!

Nieuwe leadership journeys met The Future Firm

Ik heb al eerder bericht over mijn werkzaamheden voor The Future Firm. De samenwerking gaat nog steeds erg goed en naar tevredenheid. Ik geniet van de journeys: het is mooi om mensen zo intensief met zichzelf en elkaar aan de slag te zien gaan; de een met heel veel weerstand, de ander met een hele open instelling. Uiteindelijk haalt iedereen er uit wat ze er zelf instoppen… De komende maanden zal ik voor The Future Firm bij 3 nieuwe journeys betrokken zijn voor verschillende medewerkers van Akzo Nobel (internationaal en Nederland). Dit is onderdeel van het ‘Ignite The Spirit‘ program, in samenwerking met de Oxford Leadership Academy. Dus Friesland, Texel, Achterhoek…here we come!
